Plumbing Bath to Shower Tray Rectory Close Ashtead

Client Location – Rectory Close, Ashtead

Client Brief:
To remove an existing bath from a bathroom and convert to a walk in Shower enclosure. Also, to build two false walls to accommodate the new shower tray size and to use one false wall to accommodate a new concealed 2-way thermostatic shower valve with all the associated pipe-work.
Dabney Solution:
To achieve the clients brief, part demolition of the existing bathroom was required. Tiles where removed to facilitate the bath removal with hot and cold water supplies isolated. To gain the correct waste water gradient to an existing internal plastic soil pipe it was agreed that the best solution was to raise the new shower tray by placing it on solid timber plinth. The new tray dimension was 1400mm x 800mm and we had a gap measuring 1700mm.

Along with a custom built solid timber plinth we also built two false walls in timber at each end of the new shower tray to close the gap so after the area was tiled a new glass shower enclosure with sliding doors could be attached to the new false walls to provide a solid water proof environment. A new 2-way thermostatic concealed shower valve was carefully plumbed inside one of the false walls with all the correct distances adhered too. This particular shower valve had a separate handset and a fixed shower head. After pressure testing all the pipework, the false walls were closed up with a moisture proof 12mm plaster board.

The new shower tray plinth had 18mm WBP plywood cut to size and attached with screws.

End result:
The new concrete resin shower tray was firmly bedded to the plinth using a weak sand and cement mixture to achieve a perfect level from all angles. The waste pipe was connected through an access at the front of the timber plinth. On completion, the new 2-way thermostatic shower valve was used to provide water to test the waste water drain and double check for correct operation and leaks. The new shower tray and all internal angles to the new enclosure were silicone sealed in Dow Corning 785 mould resistant sealant. The front of the plinth was closed using 12mm WBP plywood.
